the weekend begins...

Well I got up early Friday morning to go to my orientation. I thought getting up early was going to be the key to getting on Chilean schedule, but I guess I didn't account for Friday night plans... Orientaion was really nice, the University is beautiful. I will get a memory card for my camera today (Saturday) so I can start to post pictures so you can see what I'm talking about! We had breakfast with all their international staff and I met all the students I will be studying with. 18 girls and 2 guys. Muy bien :-) I thought I was doing really well with the Spanish language...I was really confident from my conversations with my mom and brother, and the teachers at the university...but then we took our entrance exam to the college. We listened to a speech by la presidenta Michelle Bachelet and I could barely catch a word. My mom Judith told me the Chileans know when they are talking to a gringo and they slow down their rhythm and adjust their vocabulary. I have a lot of "trabajo" to do before I can call myself a fluent speaker.

I sent an email to all my classmates saying that we should all meet up and do something that night. My friend Cheryl said people could come over to her house and we could all go out to a "discoteca" that night. It was a blast.

I hung out with about 8 girls from my class and three Chilean guys. Jorge introduced me to the popular Spanish drink "piscola" pronounced "peace-cola". I'll try to keep everything PG-13 here but we had a lot of fun. We hung out and had some piscolas at Cheryls house... the three Chilean guys were really cool and hilarious...everyone here is so nice. Then we walked over to a club...it was absolutely crazy. Since I am pretty much a celebrity here, we went to the front of the line and got in the club for free. I'm kind of a big deal...

But seriously Jorge knew the bouncer so we really did go to the front and get in for free...it was really cool. Most people don't even go out until midnight in Chile and we probably got to the club around 2am...their schedule is really crazy. We had a really good time in the club...but with my piscola impaired judgement I decided to try and walk home.

Evidently I was about 10 miles away from my house (I took the metro to Cheryl's house but it closes at 11pm). I walked for about an hour by myself trying to get a taxi but for some reason no taxi wanted to pick me up. I got lost and had to talk to some locals and they took me to a restaurant to ask for directions. I was still about 6 miles away from my house and the people in the restaurant had no idea where I lived when I told them the closest street intersection. So I set off walking again. I saw a couple people sleeping on the sidewalk, at this point it was about 4am and I was tempted to join them. I was thumbing for a ride while I was walking and FINALLY a taxi found me and picked me up. I got back safely and called it a night. Hopefully Saturday night is a little more relaxed I plan on watching the Eagles game

adios!
